Antique Phone

Personal Project

Model • Texture

This was a student project I worked on as a part of the Texture 2 class from Gnomon with Tran Ma as my instructor. I learned a lot about how to texture using Substance 3D Painter and also about composition, colors, and layout for an appealing final result.

Idea and Model

I first had to come up with an idea, composition, and layout of what I wanted to model and decided to go with a focus on an antique phone from the early 1900s. I've always loved stainglass windows in older churches, so I wanted to add in a lamp with a staingalss shade. I also put in a fountian pen and a notepad with a metal cover to expand on the 1900s setting.

Progression

  • I first started with the idea of a 1900s table with an antique phone, lamp, and notepad.
  • Then I explored the colors for the phone and lamp and decided to go with more complementary colors of orange and green.
  • Lastly, I finished the texturing with the back wallpaper and the picture frames.

Texturing

The texturing was done using Substance 3D Painter and applied to different material types such as metals, glass, and porcelain. Base color, roughness normal maps were exported from Substance Painter and used in Maya and rendered using Vray.
